From Pilot Verification to 7 In-Service Vessels and 10 Newbuild PCTCs — A Phased Rollout
SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA – September 16, 2026 – Avikus, HD Hyundai's autonomous navigation specialist, announced that it has signed a contract with Hyundai Glovis to supply autonomous navigation solutions for 10 newbuild PCTCs (Pure Car and Truck Carriers). This contract is a follow-on project built on the companies' prior experience applying the technology to in-service vessels, and marks the expansion of the collaboration between Hyundai Glovis and Avikus beyond the demonstration stage into fleet-wide digital transformation.
In 2024, the two companies carried out a HiNAS Control pilot project on one of Hyundai Glovis's PCTCs, verifying the effectiveness of AI-based autonomous navigation technology. Based on actual voyage data, the project confirmed fuel savings of up to 3.9% along with enhanced navigational decision-support performance. Building on these results, Hyundai Glovis decided in 2025 to expand HiNAS Control to seven in-service vessels.
This new contract takes that progress a step further. Drawing on the performance and operational experience gained from its existing vessels, Hyundai Glovis has decided to expand the application of HiNAS to 10 newbuild PCTCs. This represents a phased expansion from a single-vessel demonstration to in-service fleet deployment and now to newbuild vessels, making it a leading example of autonomous navigation technology being successfully adopted across a commercial fleet.
The vessels under contract consist of 10 units of 10,800 CEU-class PCTCs, some of which have already been delivered, with the remaining vessels scheduled for delivery through 2028. Avikus will supply each vessel with HiNAS Control, its AI-based autonomous navigation solution, together with SVM (Surround View Monitoring), a situational awareness system that provides an integrated view of the vessel's surroundings.
With this contract, the number of Hyundai Glovis vessels equipped with HiNAS, including the original pilot vessel, will expand to a total of 18 vessels, comprising seven in-service vessels and ten newbuilds. This is regarded as a representative example of the commercialization and fleet-scale deployment of AI-based autonomous navigation technology in the global PCTC market.
Jung-suk Kim, Head of the Shipping Business Division at Hyundai Glovis, said, "Through the pilot project and its application to in-service vessels, we were able to directly confirm HiNAS's safety benefits and operational efficiency improvements. This expansion to newbuild vessels goes beyond simple technology adoption and represents an important milestone in accelerating Hyundai Glovis's digital transformation and environmentally responsible operations strategy."
Jae-ho Kang, CEO of Avikus, said, "The expansion from a pilot demonstration to in-service vessels and now to newbuild vessels is a meaningful achievement that demonstrates the real value of HiNAS. We will continue to enhance vessel safety and efficiency through AI-based autonomous navigation technology and lead digital innovation in the shipping industry."
HiNAS Control is an AI-based autonomous navigation solution that integrates and analyzes real-time voyage data and sensor information to provide optimal route recommendations, collision avoidance support, and navigational decision support. SVM provides integrated monitoring of the vessel's surroundings, enhancing crew situational awareness during port entry, departure, and navigation through narrow waterways, thereby supporting a safer operating environment.
